Savour Summer in Style at Côte Henley

From Bell Street to Bordeaux – this summer, if you’re looking for a reason to enjoy some fabulous food in Henley, Côte’s Prix Fixe menu is it.
Honestly, it’s such a treat. Experience Henley was invited along to try the dishes on the Prix Fixe menu, and we weren’t disappointed. At £21.50 for two courses or £25.50 for three midweek, it’s amazing value. There’s a special weekend version too if you fancy a leisurely brunch or relaxed dinner.

We sat out on the stunning little terrace tucked away behind the restaurant, accessed through the conservatory, and it’s a proper hidden gem (this area is dog friendly). On these gorgeous sunny days, it’s the perfect place to soak up the atmosphere. If it gets too warm though, the cool air-conditioned restaurant inside is just as lovely.
To start we had Truffled Corn Velouté, think silky, velvety soup with just the right amount of earthy truffle, bites of chestnut mushroom and brioche croutons. The Confit Duck Rarebit was a bit of a hit. I mean we devoured it! Creamy Comté cheese and duck béchamel on toasted brioche, topped with a perfectly poached egg. It’s a winner. What is also a winner is the lovely Romesco sauce on which the Boursin Salad sits. A salad of pickled vegetables with crispy panisse, pistachio dukkha and crumbled Boursin cheese. A perfect bite to eat in the sunshine.

The Main courses are excellent. Their ubiquitous Steak Frites is a classic done well, and the Fish Parmentier is just comfort in a bowl. Fat juicy prawns, haddock and salmon in a white wine a cheese sauce topped with scrummy potato puree and a Comte cheese crust. Just yum!
New on the menu is the Poulet au Bacon which is a marinated chicken breast in a moreish smoked bacon velouté that makes you want to lick the plate. Also, the Tomato and Harissa Tagine was a bit of a star. A slow cooked fiery harissa stew of giant couscous, tomato and courgette packed with warmth and spice. The big juicy tomatoes in the dish were so good.

Even if you weren’t planning on dessert… you probably should. The chocolate mousse hits right every time, indulgent and decadent but light an airy. Pretty irresistible of you’re a chocolate fiend.
There is a lovely Blueberry Financier, a baked almond and brown butter cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. This is a great choice if you fancy something sweet but not too heavy. There are five choices of scoop to have if you’re choosing the ice cream and sorbet to round off your meal. In the heat we had a scoop each of the lemon sorbet and salted caramel ice cream, which were super refreshing.
If you’re into cheese more than pudding, the Cheese Plate lets you mix and match three options from the selection: Comté, Pont-l’Évêque, Roquefort, Délice de Bourgogne and Chèvre Buchette.
It’s the sort of menu that doesn’t require an occasion, you can just decide to treat yourself any day of the week. Just great food, great value, and a lovely vibe.
