A weekly round-up of what’s on and must sees at Henley’s fabulous three screen cinema, The Regal Picturehouse in Borama Way.

There is something for everyone at the Regal this week,  including a labyrinthine documentary, a moving family drama, a gritty crime tale, an epic fantasy adventure and much more:

MISHA AND THE WOLVES (12A) is a breath-taking documentary full of twists and turns, based on the true story of Misha Defonesca. What starts as the heroic and harrowing story of a Holocaust victim’s improbable survival gives way to a dark tale of secrets, lies and betrayal.

THE PEBBLE AND THE BOY (15) is a touching comedy-drama that uses the mod scene to explore themes of family and grief. Patrick Nacnamee stars as John, embarking on a scooter trip to Brighton with his late father’s ashes – a host of famous British faces round out the supporting cast.

In SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS (12A), Director Destin Daniel Cretton (Just Mercy) takes a heartfelt father/son drama and infuses it with spectacular martial arts choreography and elements of Chinese folklore. The film stars Simu Liu, Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians) and legendary Asian stars Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) and Tony Leung (In The Mood For Love).

Clare Dunne takes on double duty as both star and co-writer in HERSELF (15), the acclaimed new film from director Phyllida Lloyd (The Iron Lady, Mamma Mia!). Dunne’s Sandra is a struggling mum in need of a new home, when the system lets her down she takes matters into her own hands and attempts to build one for herself!

Opening Wednesday, THE MANY SAINTS OF NEWARK (TBC) is the fascinating new chapter in the life of TV’s Tony Soprano. Michael Gandolfini reprises the character his father brought to life over 20 years ago, playing Soprano as he grows up amidst the Newark Riots, racial tensions and his family’s ongoing involvement in a gang war.

As always, there’s still a chance to catch up on some of your recent favourites: Jennifer Hudson is Aretha Franklin in musical biopic RESPECT (12A), Jude Law in spiralling family drama THE NEST (15) andBenedict Cumberbatchinthetrue-story inspired thriller THE COURIER (12A).

For something completely different, try nature documentary ESCAPE FROM EXTINCTION (12A), as part of the Big Green Week, concert documentary OASIS: KNEBWORTH 1996 and Northern Ballet’s daring take on DANGEROUS LIAISONS (15).
