Theatre
This week 8th-11th March, delve into the devious world of Blackadder and his descendants with the Henley Amateur Operatic & Dramatic Society and their production of Blackadder The Whole Damn Dynasty (Almost). Performance includes dinner by Paul Clerehugh of the Crooked Billet. Sounds like a fabulous foray into the fray of Flanders.
March at The Kenton Theatre includes the powerful production SOLD! on the 12th March where one woman tells of her extraordinary journey to overcome the brutality of slavery and she becomes a beacon for the British anti-slavery movement.
Philip Barry’s sparkling comedy The Philadelphia Story arrives in Henley 22nd-25th March, plus the acclaimed retelling of classic film Die Hard Yippee Ki Yay from Richard Marsh on 26th March. On 30th March Simon Evans: The Work of the Devil star of Live at the Apollo, Mock the Week and more gets stuck into his show with his usual excoriating views of a world on fire.
Finally the wonderful physical theatre of comic actors Mercè Ribot and and Patricia Rodriguez on 31st March in Nothing Happens (Twice) with this new hilarious comedy show which takes some well aimed potshots at the protective world of classic modern theatre (watch out Sam Beckett’s estate!) and at the same time explores some of the pain experienced by performers when Covid brought their livelihood to a grinding halt in 2020.
Live Music
Lots of live music to keep you going this month from a bit of Squeeze to Choral Concerts.
Starting with this month’s toe tapping, pant swinging offering from The Crooked Billet’s Music Nights. Up-close and intimate, unique musicians perform along with a pre-show dinner. Weds 8th March sees John Etheridge & Christian Garrick providing a feast of interplay, improvisation and eclectic repertoire with music ranging from Peter Gabriel to Richard Rogers via Dollar Brand and Alison Goldfrapp.
For St. Patrick’s Day, 17th March, a foot stompin’ Irish fiddle band by the Billet’s friends from The Pogues & Rory Gallagher’s old band providing that infectious Dublin bar craic, and 21st March sees Squeeze’s Glenn Tilbrook banging out all the hits Labelled With Love • Cool For Cats • Pulling Mussels From a Shell.
If a bit of pub style partying is what you’re after, Hof’s Bar & Dining have live music every Saturday night and both The Old Bell and The Three Tuns round your weekends off with cosy acoustic sets every Sunday evening.
If music be the food of love, the old bard got that right. It’s 425 years since William Shakespeare put quill to scroll and the Tamesis Chamber Choir have tried their best to match his productivity by polishing up a gallimaufry of 22 songs in their ten weeks of rehearsal. Almost all of them use Shakespeare’s dramatic lyrics, from Much Ado to Macbeth to A Midsummer Night’s Dream for their performance at St. Mary’s Church on 25th March.
