It’s Fishy Friday – Where to get your Fish & Chips Fix

This article was first posted back in June of last year and has already been updated once. We certainly didn’t think that we’d be updating it for the third time, however we believe it is vitality important to know where we can all get our Fish & Chips fix during lockdown.
A little Henley history to whet your appetite for a wet fishy Friday, as well as where to get your delicious Fish & Chips.
It is thought that Henley’s Friday Street’s name may reflect the presence of medieval fish ponds at its east end closest to the River, which were attached to the then adjacent rectory house. Juvenile fish are called fry! Hmm, fry day street? In the Middle Ages Friday was a fasting day, when people were expected to eat fish rather than meat. There you go, an Experience Henley piece of useful information!
On to the important bit, where can you get your battered fish this Friday. Henley’s restaurants and pubs are closed due to the Coronavirus pandemic and many of them would normally have a great Fish & Chips on the menu, so where can you get some right now?

The ultimate Friday treat from Orwell’s offers lobster & chips, turbot & chips, scampi (the real deal Scottish langoustine) & chips and halibut & chips but you have to get in quick with order. If you’re out of luck try again next week! It will be worth it!

Not only do the Crooked Billet have their beer battered Fish & Chips to take away you can also push the boat out and treat yourself to a full on crustacean feast.
Whole freshly prepared lobster, whole cracked Cornish crab, prawns in their shell, homemade mayonnaise, puy lentil winter vegetable salad, Oriental slaw and a freshly baked loaf! Phew. They say it’s enough for two…and some!
