Gin when your winning on World Gin Day – 5 Brilliant Local Gins
Henley is blessed with having it’s very own Mr Hobbs gin and we also have other fabulous gins on our doorstep, so for World Gin Day, grab a glass & pour yourself one, you deserve it and stock your shelves with a local gin. Here’s the run down.
1. Mr Hobbs Henley Gin
On World Gin Day it would be rude not to crack open a bottle of Mr Hobbs.
Harry Hobbs’s old recipe dates back to 1870, we have based the 2017 recipe on five of his original botanicals, one of which is still a family secret, and added Lime Flower and Lemon Peel to give it a citrus twist. Beginning with fragrant floral notes and soft marshmallow, zesty citrus adds clarity and bite amongst savoury juniper and sharp Orris root.
2. Marlow Gin
We add tones of citrus from the best quality lemongrass and fresh lime with liquorice to give a more viscous texture.
Angelica provides a long lasting flavour; while hops grown in the UK add a spicy, honey and earthy aroma that also lets us celebrate and recognise the brewing history and heritage, past and present of our riverside town.
3. Chalgrove Artisan Distillery – OX Gins
We use a neutral grain spirit which is 96% ABV (alcohol by volume) to create our Oxford Dry Gin. We then add the flavour using our selected botanicals.
The base botanicals (including juniper berries and coriander) are added to the spirit to macerate for 24 hours, after which the additional botanicals are then added to the pot still and we then begin the distillation process.
In addition, although we filter our gin, we do not chill-filter which enables us to retain all of the flavours in our gin. Due to the retention of natural oils, the appearance of the gin in the bottle may look hazy. This may also be evident when you add the mix of your choice to the gin.
4. The Oxford Artisan Distillery – TOAD
We are a true craft distillery; a rare species found in only a few very special places around the world. We care deeply about the quality of our spirits but also the impact of their production. Using ancient and genetically diverse populations of Rye, Wheat and Barley, grown exclusively for us on local farms. We are one of a handful of distilleries that really do make spirits from the field to the bottle, we oversee the entire process on our site beneath the dreaming spires of Oxford. The Oxford Artisan Distillery is in every sense of the word a true craft distillery.
5. CollaGin
“Collagen in gin? Why not! It doesn’t affect nor enhance the taste of the tipple but it is a tasty way of getting your dose of collagen.
It is summer which means a perfect excuse to capture beautiful shots of our gin by a pool in the glorious Oxfordshire sunshine.
Our best serve is with a slice of pink grapefruit and 1724 tonic water, but when the sun is out, we fancy getting a little more creative. Try CollaGin in a martini, with a star anise or a cinnamon stick or it is smooth enough to have just on the rocks. Give it a try, everything tastes better in the sunshine during the Great British summer!”
