Are you ready for Henley’s Sauna & Plunge revolution

There’s a quiet revolution happening in Henley-on-Thames, not in the boardrooms or boutiques, but in the steam and silence of wood-fired saunas and icy plunges. As wellness trends evolve beyond the gym and green juice, Henley is embracing a more elemental ritual: contrast therapy. Rooted in ancient tradition and backed by modern science, the sauna and cold plunge movement is gaining momentum across the area, offering locals and visitors alike a chance to reset head-on.

Beyond the physical benefits of improved circulation, reduced inflammation, better sleep and more, contrast therapy offers something deeper, a return to ritual. In a world that rarely pauses these days, these spaces invite us to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with ourselves and our surroundings. How lucky we are to have these on our doorstep in such beautiful surroundings and the gorgeous Chiltern countryside.

Here are four curated sanctuaries where you can immerse yourself in the ritual and emerge renewed.

Soala Sauna – Culden Faw near Temple Island

We drove down to the riverside on Culden Faw Estate (access via Toad Hall) to check out the most recent of Henley’s sauna and cold plunge experiences. Nestled on the banks of the Thames near Temple Island is Soala Sauna, a truly sensory escape into nature’s embrace. As mist rises from the water and marshland wildlife stirs, guests sit in silence, warmed by the crackle of firewood, cooled by the river breeze early in the morning or warmed by the Autumn sun. It’s a space that invites stillness, reflection, and deep restoration. Whether you’re a seasoned sauna-goer or a curious newcomer, Soala’s riverside setting which is totally off grid, offering a rare kind of peace and solitude.

We spoke to Eloise about her dream to create this space and what it means. She is someone who is truly grounded to what she is offering, having studied and researched contrast therapy greatly. We discussed at length about the individual, that everyone is different and what people take from it isn’t a one size fits all. She says, “the main highlight for me is that people know this isn’t a place where there are any expectations of them, simply to come as they are today, and take what they need from the experience.” That there are, and should be, no preconceptions of what guests feel or takeaway from it.

The site is wonderful and calming, with a board walk set up linking the stunning bespoke built sauna, changing area, shower, cold plunges, rest area over the river and funky bar serving cinnamon tea.

In short Soala Sauna is a nourishing hot and cold therapy escape by the river in Henley. Slow down, warm through, cool off & share space in the green expanse.
