Who needs a trip to Ronnie Scott’s when you have this calibre of musicians playing right here in Henley.

Last week (14th December) The Nick Etwell Quartet landed at The Little Angel and blew the audience away with their funky, soul and bluesy set. What an incredible evening of outstanding, top flight jazz. We honestly defy anyone not to be infected by the rich sound of these brilliant musicians.

Don’t be too disheartened to have missed out as Matt Dockray of The Little Angel is promising more of this to come with a monthly jazz series and we can’t wait.

Matt said, “Having celebrated our first year as custodians of the Little Angel, we decided it was time to start curating some great music and entertainment. Nick has been a dear friend for many years, having met mutually through Mumford and Sons and our previous venues in London, we couldn’t think of a better group and style to launch our monthly Jazz series. The band have played with every who’s who artist and they are nothing short of excellent. We were honoured to have them join us and we can’t wait to have the monthly Jazz series along with some special up and coming acoustic artists starting next month. “

Trumpeter Nick Etwell is perhaps best known as front man to long standing soul jazz group The Filthy Six (Acid Jazz Records/Color Red). His work as a session musician the past 20+ years has seen him tour extensively across the globe backing up a varied and diverse range of artists including Tom Jones, Mavis Staples, Beck, Ronnie Spector, David Axelrod, Roy Harper, Roger Daltrey, Madness, Duran Duran, Jill Scott, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and Mumford & Sons to name a few.

This quartet features three fellow sidemen from The Filthy Six – James Fenn on Guitar (Omar, James Taylor Quartet, Ola Onabule), Pete Whittaker on Organ (Jim Mullen, Art Themen, Dave O’Higgins) and Simon Lea on Drums (Dionne Warwick, Rod Stewart, Jamie Cullum) – with the group performing a mixture of jazz standards, soul jazz classics and original material, leaning towards the groovier side of things whenever possible.
