In the Spotlight: The Dub Bar
There is a new kid on the block in Market Place, The Dub Bar and we caught up with owner Matt to ask him a few questions about the new opening.
What brings you to Henley and why The Dub? Location, location, location … we did our original due-diligence and looked at lots of towns throughout Berkshire, we had a few fall throughs early on in Wokingham and then this property in Henley appeared and it was a winner. As for the name I was working on the business plan with one of my best friends, we were doing a tasting session and I said I didn’t have a name. He asked “well what is this place going to be” I said “it’s a Diner and a Pub” his response was “So it’s a DUB” and the name was born.
You starting fitting out just before lockdown, that must have been tough having to stop and changed your plans somewhat? Fortunately we only got the property in Feb, so there was always an expectation of a good few months to prepare. We haven’t had to change our plans initially as it has been a small and consistent team throughout. As for the opening plans we are lucky to have the space for social distance inside and out, but not going to lie this has been a challenging time.
What can people expect at The Dub? Good food, a relaxed atmosphere and a hub for meeting people (at a distance of course) … our American / UK twist on in house made food, locally sourced ales and beers from Lovibonds Henley with a chilled front room feel make us unique .. we cannot wait to share 😀
Do you have a secret recipe for your burgers and have your ‘dogs’ got a good snap? Yes, my own blend of seasoning for the burgers and all sauces are in house made! Dogs are actually Beef, not smoked (more American aligned) and again the house made sauces make it. I am also Gluten intolerant and the wider plans (once suppliers are back) is to offer a full gluten free, Veggie and kids menus …
What is The Dub doing to be friendlier to our planet? We’re using environmentally friendly packaging, during our refit we have replaced almost all old inefficient appliances and ancillaries to new energy efficient ones. All AC has been brought up to new energy saving legislation and we plan to employ locally to reduce emissions for staff to get to theDub.
When do you think you’ll be opening the doors? Well we are hoping this Saturday for takeaways but we are still waiting on some key components, if not then it will be in the few days that follow.
Setting up a restaurant must mean you love your food. What is the best meal you’ve ever had anywhere? Hmm great question … my late mums beef stroganoff, I’m still trying to recreate it … maybe one day!
What is your guilty food pleasure? Ben and Jerry’s … any flavour.
What is your earliest food memory as a child? Baking cakes at school probably, but I have been in the industry on and off for years …
Marmite, yes or no? I’m in the Yes camp there.
What’s always in your fridge? I know this is always a debate but it’s Ketchup.
On a scale of 1-10 how excited are you about opening? I’m a 9, excited but that 1% remaining is absolute terror.
How would you sum up Henley in one sentence? During this period of lockdown it is clear to see that Henley is a wonderful bubble, respectful, unique, beautiful and we hope the perfect place for our Dub to call home.
