Somerville College Choir, Oxford / Howells: Life and Loss
Somerville College Choir, Oxford
William Dawes – conductor
This programme of music from the UK over the years focusses on Herbert Howells, those he influenced and those who influenced him. The first half, with music by Tallis, Walford Davies, Charles Wood, and Howells himself, looks back to the music and teachers that influenced Howells. The second, with music by Cecilia McDowall, David Bednall, Madeleine Dring, Ivor Gurney, and Bob Chilcott looks at music by composers who have been influenced by Howells, amongst them colleagues, pupils, and others who have been inspired by this composer’s easily identifiable harmonic language.
The centrepiece of the programme is Howells’ moving Requiem, which the composer himself came to associate with the loss of his son in the years following Michael’s death.
