Superconductors have many applications; magnetic separation, their use in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopes and Magnetic Resonance Imaging machines, on power lines and in fusion reactors such as the Joint European Torus (JET) and ITER.

Joseph will discuss the basic concepts – electrical and magnetic – of superconductivity, the strange behaviour of superconductors, why they need a cryogenic environments and how they compare to conventional and permanent magnets.

Joseph Boehm studied for his MSc in Regensburg, Bavaria followed by a PhD at the University of Salford. After working with several UK, German and US companies, he joined the Rutherford Laboratory at Harwell where he worked until he retired in June this year.
