A Taste of South Africa at The Little Angel

Last week Experience Henley visited The Little Angel pub, tucked away just off the riverbank in Henley over the bridge. It has recently undergone a sparkly new refurbishment and along with it, a new menu of bold flavours and big character. So we were there to try it!
The refurb has made a noticeable difference, particularly the repositioning of the bar which now sits proudly at the centre of the space which delivers real visual impact as you walk in. The redesign is tasteful and well-executed, enhancing the overall atmosphere without losing the original charm. Thankfully, the cosy fireside corner to the left of the entrance, and other intimate nooks remain intact, offering a nice contrast to the light-filled openness of the conservatory dining space.

We explored a handful of dishes from the menu, which blends classic British pub fare with South African influences. It’s a confident offering whilst being solid and familiar. The Boerewors Scotch Egg was rather good, served with a spicy ‘Boom Boom’ sauce which added depth without being too overpowering. The Gambas Pil Pil were plump, juicy and deliciously garlicky, and the Bobotie, a traditional South African baked dish, was warmly spiced and really filling. We also tried the tasy Sticky Pork Belly Bites from the nibbles menu, lovely and soft, and a super hearty Steak & Ale pie with chips and a big jug of gravy. This was all washed down with a rather enjoyable bottle of house wine.

The menu is peppered with signature dishes like the ‘posh chicken & chips’, and there’s a dedicated plant-based section offering creative, well-considered options for those seeking meat-free choices. Prices may feel a little punchy at first glance, but portion sizes are generous and the quality consistent.
There’s plenty to return for. Next on our list would definitely be either the sharing Little Angel Meat Feast of scotch egg, spare ribs, buffalo chicken wings, steak strips and Cajun fries or the Fish Mix Platter with hot and spicy calamari, cod goujons, katsu king prawns, sriracha baby corn, garlic bread, garlic aioli and sweet chilli dip.
Other interesting sounding dishes include Persian Shirazu Salad and Harissa Pulled Lamb Roulade, along with crowd pleasers like the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich and Racks of Ribs. Not forgetting as well that they also have their popular carvery every Sunday 12-7pm.
The Little Angel is clearly leaning into its strengths garnered from it’s sister pubs, The While Hart at Nettlebed and The Crown at Playhatch, of good food, thoughtful service, along with a setting that feels both refreshed and familiar.
The only other thing we would say is maybe a few less signs about parking!
