“The people, not the steeple, is the church.” George Fox, 1652

The Quaker Architectural Heritage – Beyond the Bricks will be a wide-ranging display and demonstrations about the evolution of Henley Meeting’s Architectural Heritage through the ages. Saturday 13th September from 2.00 – 5.00 p.m. at the Friends Meeting House, garden and ancient burial ground.

Find out how the present Meeting House was built on biscuits. Open to all, with free refreshments including apt biscuits.

The focus for this year’s Heritage Week is buildings.  Our Victorian Meeting House was built to replace the old cottage Meeting Room that had been in use since the 17th Century when the Quakers first arrived in Henley.

At the time of building there was a big philanthropic movement sweeping the country to teach adults (who had not been able to afford any education) to read and write.  The new building of the Henley Meeting House was designed as a versatile space to be used not only as a Quaker place of worship but also to accommodate men and women’s classrooms for an Adult School.
