Local artist Warren Kerley’s ‘On Reflection’ exhibition at the River & Rowing Museum 8th Feb – 1st Apr, uses abstract depictions of experiences to unfold and reflect on life’s complex tapestry.

Crafted with a dense texture, every piece draws inspiration from the serene and potent qualities of water to reflect the ebb and flow of mortality. These pieces of art offer a moving examination of the journey through life, with the dynamic movement acting as a mesmerizing mirror of the artists’ own experiences. Examine the contradictory functions of water as a source of life and a sign of change as it reflects the many stories that are woven into the fabric of the observer’s own narrative.

In his work, the impact of all bodies of water—ocean, sea, river, and lake—is examined, with Warren motivated to set out on an emotional quest to discover more on the power and mystery of all forms of natural water. Warren is instinctively drawn to the entrancing energy of water and uses it as inspiration to build large, textural sculptures that convey not only its power but also the whimsical and uncontrollable intensity.

Sculpture and painting are combined in his work. Warren uses a range of textural approaches to capture movement that is both peaceful and powerful. Each piece thus has an exaggerated and explosive depth that is simply captivating.

The vitality of water is captured and a striking visual impact is produced by using iridescent acrylic colours, resin, and a combination of bright and dark paint effects. The overpainting of the sculpted textures build to produce a final work of art that is strong, emotionally charged and hypnotic.

“My fascination with water was sparked by a memory from my childhood. My carefree summers were spent swimming, fishing, and building rock pools on the beach whilst daydreaming. I was diving into the fresh salty sea off the breakwaters when I got into trouble with a powerful undercurrent. The force of the water pushed me down to shingles where I momentarily blacked out: the ultimate experience of peaceful calm in the midst of the power of turbulent strength.

Thankfully, a friend saved me and pulled me to safety. But, my subconscious mind often revisits the day’s impact, feeling helpless against the sea’s force; I look for explanations and understanding, emotionally attracted to water in all forms.

The marks I create in my art represent the inherent energy and flow of water, capturing a moment in its ever-changing power and unpredictability”.

The original, unique pieces are available to private collectors, but bespoke commissions are also undertaken. All pieces are one-of-a-kind original. They are completely unique and cannot be duplicated, recreated or copied. Prints are not available.
