17 things to do in Henley this October

Autumn is upon us, so what’s happening in and around Henley this October? There’s loads to keep you busy with art exhibitions, walks, talks, trails, cinema, ballet, live music and tastings plus of course, our old friend Halloween. We will be posting a Halloween Special article soon, in the meantime here are few ideas and dates to put in your diary.

1st – 10th October

fairmile Vineyard Harvest – 3rd & 4th October

Visit Fairmile Vineyard from 10am – 5pm to see the harvest preparations and taste (free of charge) the newly-released 2016 fizz.

Matthew Bourne’s The Red Shoes – 4th October

Matthew Bourne’s gorgeous ballet based on the Powell and Pressburger 1948 film classic at the Regal Picturehouse.


Henley Arts Trail – 3rd – 11th October

After the disappointment of its cancellation earlier this year, some of the Henley Arts Trail artists are putting on live exhibitions of their work with great consideration for social distancing to keep visitors safe. In addition some exhibitors will be showing their work online under the banner of the Autumn HAT.


Henley Literary Festival – Running until 4th October

Henley Literary Festival, one of the UK’s largest book festivals continues until Sunday 4th October online. With still 20 events to run, it’s well worth checking out.


Art of the Wild: Gertrude Hermes and the Natural World’ Curator Tour – 5th October

Final Curator Tour for ‘Art of the Wild: Gertrude Hermes and the Natural World’ at the River & Rowing Museum. Hermes, an innovative wood engraver and printmaker, had a restless curiosity about the natural world, including the River Thames. An Ashmolean Museum exhibition, it includes fish and flower prints as well as her monumental coloured linocuts of the 1950s.


John Piper Curator’s Tour – 9th, 16th & 23rd October

John Piper is one of the most prolific and versatile British artists of the 20th Century. The River & Rowing Museum’s gallery features works from private and public collections, many on display for the first time, which demonstrate Piper’s outstanding ability to diversify from paintings and drawings to stained glass and ceramics. Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity for a tour of the Piper Gallery and insight into John Piper’s work with one of the Museum’s Curators.


Cheng Ping Exhibition – Running until 13th October

An exhibition by Chinese artist, Chen Ping at Informality Gallery. The exhibition shows a selection of work which explains the artist’s deep traditional interest in humanity and Chinese mythology.

11th – 20th October

‘Women in Photography – Lay of the Land’ Exhibition – 15th Oct – 24th Nov

Informality Gallery is delighted to present its upcoming exhibition, entitled ‘Women in Photography – Lay of the Land’. The exhibition is co-curated by Virginia Woods-Jack, artist and founder of Women in Photography AU & NZ. The exhibition shows works from a selection of International female artists’ whose disciplines extend into photo-media.



The Henley Story Curator Tour – 15th October

Discover the rich history of Henley on Thames, made famous by the Henley Royal Regatta at the River & Rowing Museum, on a new and informative guided tour showcasing some unique and historic items from the collection. From the first evidence of human activity in this area, 250,000 years ago, through to the rise of Leander Club and regattas drawing rowers and pleasure seekers from around the world, hear how Henley has always been so closely linked to its special position on the River Thames and about the fascinating people who have shaped its story.



Gin Tasting Cruise – 16th October

Hobbs of Henley Gin Tasting Cruise 6.00-9.00pm with The Gin to My Tonic on their flagship vessel ‘The New Orleans’. Included in your ticket price will be bar snacks and of course your Gin & different tonics for the evening.


Michael Ball & Alfie Boe – Back Together 17th & 18th October

At The Regal Cinema the world’s ultimate musical duo, Michael Ball and Alfie Boe are ‘Back Together’ and set to light up the big screen with the final show of their UK tour at the O2 Arena.


Chilterns Walking Festival – 17th Oct – 1st November

The Chilterns Walking Festival is part of a month-long Chilterns Celebration running throughout October. This is a brand-new festival of events designed to bring communities together and inspire people to explore and enjoy the heritage and landscape around them

Stevie Nicks 24 Karat Gold – 21st & 25th October

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame icon Stevie Nicks brings her legendary music to the big screen when Stevie Nicks 24 Karat Gold The Concert comes to The Regal Cinema for two nights only.


Exhibition on Screen: Frida Kahlo – 22nd & 23rd October

At The Regal Cinema a film about the life and work of the Mexican-German painter, known for her portraits and self-portraits. Often described as a magical realist, and with much of her work inspired by the folk art of Mexico, Frida Kahlo had a distinctive vision. A bold artist and a passionate woman, she has become one of the most mythologised figures of twentieth-century painting, almost a cult figure.


Sunday Lunch cruise – 25th October

New for this year is Hobbs of Henley‘s Sunday Lunch Cruises aboard The New Orleans. Two course Sunday Roast, tea & coffee and drink on arrival. Roast sirloin beef, roast potatoes, crushed carrot & swede, garden peas & buttered cabbage, Yorkshire pudding & red wine gravy. Vegetarian option available.


Drifters Pumpkin Carving Party – 28th October

Drifters Coffee Shop socially distanced pumpkin carving party 12-2pm. Pumpkin, tools & drink included. Children must be accompanied by an adult.


“Tips for Hits” Halloween Special – 31st October

Magoos is well known for it’s Halloween parties. However this year will be a bit different. As rules stand at the moment, you can join us in groups of no more than 6 (to party at your table) closing at 10pm. We will be having live music as part of our “Tips for Hits” Halloween Special. Support our local musicians, playing their favourite spooky and kooky tunes for tips!
